What is it and Why should you drink it?
Oh Kombucha, how I love you. I almost never drink pop and we don’t buy fake sugar-filled juices anymore. Once upon a time I lived and breathed for lemonade and orange juice, but not the freshly squeezed kind! No no, the kind that comes in a concentrated can that you add water to. Not exactly real juice. Since cutting these things out of my diet (except for very special treats and occasions) I mainly drank water. Boring, right? Well, then I found kombucha.
What is it?
Kombucha is fermented black or green tea and it originated thousands of years ago in China. It has a natural bubbliness to it and is full of probiotics.
How is it made?
Kombucha is made from tea, water, sugar, and a fermenting bacterial culture. Then you can flavour it however else you want. It isn’t a sugary drink even though sugar is used in the fermentation process. Sugar is needed to feed the bacterial culture (called a scoby) and once fermentation is complete there are only trace amounts of sugar left.
Why should you drink it?
During the fermentation process, a large number of healthy bacteria (probiotics) are created. Kombucha is full of these healthy bacteria that can help your gut flora flourish. Some claim that it has detoxifying properties, improve mental clarity, and can help support your immune system, but I will let you do your own research and come to your own conclusions on that.
It also packed full of other good things like vinegar, vitamins, enzymes, antioxidants, and healthy acids.
Where can you buy it?
Just about every grocery store and health foods store sells kombucha and so do lots of cafes and restaurants, especially those aimed towards healthy living. You can even make it yourself if that is something that interests you!
If you live in Halifax, Nova Scotia you are in luck! One of my all-time favourite kombucha companies is located right here in the city – Cove Kombucha. My favourite flavours are Raspberry Lemonade and Blueberry Pomegranate. Cove Kombucha products are available at all Sobeys in Atlantic Canada and in tons of shops and cafes across the city. Newest of all you can now buy 6 packs of Cove Kombucha in all Atlantic Canada Costcos! Click here for the full list of locations.
If you live in the US, Health-Ade Kombucha has a Pink Lady Apple flavour that is one of the best things I have ever tasted. It is like fizzy apple juice. When we were in California I would buy Health-Ade Kombucha from Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. Check there websites to see where it available near you.
