Practicing Self Care
I feel like no student will protest when I say that exams are the absolute worst. I am very easily stressed and a chronic procrastinator. These two things do NOT mix well. Normally during exams, you can find me curled in a ball crying or pretending that my problems don’t exist.
I am currently counting my lucky stars that I am no longer in school and don’t have to deal with exams, but for those of you that are, I have some tips.
My absolute favourite way to take care of myself during periods of stress is to take a bath. Whenever life is really getting to me I hop into a cozy warm bath and I feel my problems melt away. I normally add a bit of baking soda and Epsom salt for detoxification and a few drops of my favourite essential oils for a bit of aromatherapy. Lavender is my favourite oil for calming down and unwinding. If I need an extra special treat I will add a bath bomb and enjoy the pretty colours and amazing scents. Bonus: you can study in the bath! Just make sure your computer doesn’t get wet.
EAT HEALTHY AND STAY HYDRATED
It is easy to let your health slip when you are stressed, but your body needs nutrients now more than ever. Think of how much work your poor brain is doing, it needs nourishment to work at its top potential!
YOGA AND MEDITATION
I find that my brain works best when my body has been worked. Exercising allows you to burn off some of your stress and start fresh. Yoga is the perfect way to do this because it exercises your mind and body (not to mention that it is so calming). Focus on your breath and let the rest fade away.
THE HARD PART
Don’t get too wrapped up in your grades. I know this sounds almost impossible, but let’s step back and think big picture for a minute. Your marks on these exams will likely not matter in next year, in 5 years, or in the grand scheme of your life. Remember that your mental health is more important than your grades. Take care of yourself. You’ve got this.
